How to Choose a Birdbath
Birdbaths are wonderful additions to any garden or outdoor space. Not only do they provide a source of water for birds, but they also add beauty and serenity to your surroundings. However, choosing the right birdbath can take time and effort with many options. In this article, we'll guide you through the essential factors to consider when selecting the perfect birdbath for your yard.
The birdbath in the picture above
Here is the exact bird feeder in the above picture. I purchased this in 2018, and it has been well worth it. The glass is durable and can handle Colorado sun and snow.
I clean it with Dawn and a scrub brush. I let it soak with vinegar and water when it gets foggy- due to the minerals in our water.
I broke the stand; now it's mounted on an old plant stand.
To support bees and other pollinators, place a few rocks in the bath for purchase. Dead insects in a birdbath can be alleviated by providing islands and giving bugs needed purchase and safety.
1. Size and Placement
Before buying a birdbath, you need to assess the available space in your garden. Consider the dimensions of the area where you plan to place the birdbath. Ensure that it's large enough to accommodate the birdbath comfortably and that birds can access it easily.
Additionally, consider the visibility of the birdbath. Placing it near bushes or trees can protect the birds but ensure it's still visible so you can enjoy watching them bathe and drink.

2. Material
Birdbaths come in various materials, each with unique characteristics. Common options include:
- Concrete: Durable and long-lasting concrete birdbaths can withstand harsh weather conditions. They are available in different designs and can be quite heavy.
- Glass: Elegant and artistic, glass birdbaths can add a touch of beauty to your garden. However, they may be more delicate and require careful handling.
- Plastic: Affordable and lightweight, plastic birdbaths are easy to move around and clean. However, they might not be as sturdy as other materials.
- Metal: Rust-resistant and stylish metal birdbaths can be a great choice for a classic or contemporary garden.
- Ceramic Durable, rust-resistant, and often found with a vast range of colorful glazes
Consider the weather conditions in your area and the level of maintenance you're willing to undertake when choosing the material of your birdbath.
3. Depth
Birdbaths should have a shallow depth to ensure the birds' safety. The water should be 2-3 inches deep at maximum. Birds enjoy splashing and bathing, but they need to feel secure. A shallow depth also makes it easier for them to land and take off.
Here is a good example of a recycled plastic/bamboo feeder that has graduated depth so bees and bluejay-sized birds can all have a good time
4. Stability
Ensure your birdbath is stable and won't tip over easily. This is particularly important if you have pets or small children who might accidentally knock it over. Heavier birdbaths made of concrete or stone tend to be more stable, but you can also secure lighter birdbaths by placing them on a sturdy pedestal.
5. Maintenance
Consider the maintenance requirements of the birdbath. All birdbaths require regular cleaning and refilling, but some materials may require more upkeep than others. Ensure that the birdbath you select is easy to clean and won't develop cracks or damages quickly.
6. Attractiveness
Birdbaths can be functional and decorative elements in your garden. Choose a birdbath that complements the overall aesthetic of your outdoor space. Consider the design, color, and style that will blend harmoniously with the surroundings.

7. Accessories
Some birdbaths come with additional features such as fountains or bubblers. These accessories add visual appeal and create movement in the water, attracting more birds to your garden. However, remember that such birdbaths may require a power source and may be more challenging to maintain.
8. Budget
Set a budget before you start shopping for a birdbath. Prices can vary widely depending on the material, size, and design. Remember that a birdbath is an investment that will enhance your outdoor space, so choose one that fits your budget and requirements.
9. Water Circulation
If possible, choose a birdbath with a mechanism for water circulation. Stagnant water can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other pests. A circulating or flowing water feature not only keeps the water fresh but also attracts more birds to your birdbath.
10. Eco-Friendly Options
Consider environmentally friendly options when choosing a birdbath. Some birdbaths are made from recycled materials, and others incorporate solar-powered features. By selecting an eco-friendly birdbath, you contribute positively to the environment while providing a haven for birds.
